2 Samuel 11  2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her.

The reality for most of us is that He has blessed us beyond what we deserve….yet we still stand on the top of our “palace” on cruise control and gaze:

  • Over the city we did not create
  • At the position we did not earn
  • From the throne we did not get elected to

And we somehow think that we deserve something that is not ours.

If this does not apply to you….stop reading this post right now……but if it does apply to you—then you are like me.

I put myself up on a throne I did not earn and, just like David, and think I am some kind of giant killer…..and then the arrogance creeps in.  And soon I am seeking something that does not belong to me.

Lord forgive me when I do this—for these actions prove that I am not worthy to be called Yours.

David had so much.

He had killed a giant with a slingshot.

He had been pursued to be killed by a ruthless dictator and survived.

He had won battle after battle.

He had acted honorably in so many situations.

And yet, here he was, standing on the roof of his palace when he should have been with his men.  Sin is never too far from any of us…….

David, and all who were under him, suffered greatly for this one choice.

He writes about it in Psalms.

And yet David made a GREAT decision.  He humbled himself and wrote about his colossal failure.  Had he chosen not to do so then we would not know who he is…..Why would he shed himself in such a terrible light in the Word of God?

It’s because it is not about him.  This book is about God!  It is about He who gives us the strength to get through any circumstance.

It is about the Lord working through us to make a great story.  For He is the Author of our lives should we let Him come and know us!

As David wrote in Psalms 51:10:  “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Thank you Jesus that I can read about men who failed…..because I know that if you can work through a man who failed……then you can use me.

When the prodigal son returned home he said:

“Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy to be called your son.  Make me one of your hired hands.”

Sometimes I think we all need to hit reset button and say this to the Lord.  Let’s not wallow in guilt—but let’s also remember not to stand on the top of the palace, look over the city, and take credit for things that the Lord has done……….

In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
