A man named Solomon had all the means and the power and the time to do whatever he wanted. And so he did. He pursued power, he pursued pleasure, he pursued wisdom, he pursued riches. As he says in his journal, which we can read in Ecclesiastes, he “denied himself nothing”. He did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, with whoever he wanted. In pursuit of being fulfilled, however, he found himself empty.
Ecclesiastes 2 11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
And he even mentioned something that has stuck with me since the first time that I read it.
Ecclesiastes 3 10 …… He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
He puts the question of eternity on their hearts, but does not give them the answer.
He has put eternal questions on our hearts, but the answers to them seem far from us. For thousands of years men have been pursuing the meaning of life. We even have our slogans as we move forward. Today, it is YOLO. When I was growing up, it was: “tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1999!!”. Yet 1999 is gone, the guy who sang it (Prince) is gone, and YOLO is going to come and go as well. There are two things that we can be sure of with regards to this issue:
- Someone will come up with a new slogan
- Using a slogan is looking at a temporary solution to a permanent situation
The Father has a better plan.
Solomon finds it at the end of his book.
I have found it.
Have you found it? Because if you have not—-you can do better.
It is the Lord. He is the eternal being that made us. And yes, he sets eternity on our hearts but does not give us the answer. But that’s because He is the Answer: Through Jesus He gave us full access to the Answer.
2000 years ago Jesus sealed it that we might not have to worry about tomorrow or eternity because He gave us the chance to come into His Kingdom. He gave us the chance to walk out our days trying to bring the Kingdom He owns into this short one that we live.
You see, that is our call. Start with the Lord’s prayer:
Thy Kingdom Come
At the beginning of my faith, I wanted more. Give me more verses, more learning, MORE……
That is human nature…..to want more. But I think that Jesus taught that simple prayer in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 because sometimes our desire to have more disables us from the very thing that we need…..just a simple connection to the Lord and the realization that WE CAN NOT, ON OUR OWN, GET MORE. If we get Him, we get all that we need….and the only way we get MORE…..is through Him!!
So cry out with that request: Thy Kingdom Come!
Start your day, your week, your year with trying to bring Him here. Because with Him comes hope, and peace, and love, and purpose……and more than we could ever want. Having Him eliminates sickness, and sadness, and brokenness. Having Him means not saying goodbye, not saying I regret, and not saying I don’t measure up.
He is the Light in the dark places, the Lion to drive out the enemy, the Lamb who you can go to, the Beginning of your days, the Counselor who can listen, the Priest who will revive you, the Ladder for you to go into heaven, the Living Water so you won’t go thirsty, the Bread of life, the Substitute for our sin, the Life who overcame death, and the Teacher who can show us…..
- With Him we don’t need to ask the question about eternity because He has covered it.
- With Him we don’t need to worry about our loved ones because He loves them more than we ever could.
- With Him we don’t need to say YOLO because we have Him today and tomorrow we will have Him also.
- With Him we don’t need to be rich because He owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
- With Him we don’t need to fear death because He defeated it.
- With Him we have no need to worry about the enemy because the enemy is destined to lose.
So, today, my friend, cry out for Thy Kingdom Come.
Because He has today and He had today before you knew it would come and He had today back before you were even in existence. He Had Today! And guess what: He has tomorrow also!
So if you don’t know where to go today to start your day or to start your quiet time…..go to: Thy Kingdom Come
And when you say it…don’t recite it. Say it with Faith and Belief. Say it with the knowledge that He has it and can do it………because YOLO won’t work. But Thy Kingdom Come will work 100% of the time and every time.
In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
