2 MINUTE WARNING

WITH DOUG JOHNSON

174 You Can Learn A Lot From A God Hater

Testimony is STILL one of the most powerful tools to finding the truth.

Eyewitnesses lead us to the TRUTH, and the TRUTH should be all that we truly care about……

Paul found the Truth on his way into Syria—in pursuit of the opportunity to torture, imprison, humiliate, and even kill the followers of Jesus.

And after his conversion, he wrote this:

Romans 8  1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.  And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.  5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.  9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

I want to encourage you today to TRULY read that.

It is an incredible testimony to our God.

And it is a great reminder to us.  We are not supposed to forget who we are:

  • We are Forgiven.  And we are not to look back on our past and be ashamed….THERE IS NOW NO CONDEMNATION
  • We are Free.  We are not in the bondage of our own sin.  We are to put a new focus—on Jesus….THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE SET ME FREE
  • We have a new Mindset.  WE HAVE OUR MINDS ON WHAT THE SPIRIT DESIRES.
  • We are not bound by legalism—for ourself OR others.  And God warns us that when we judge others—we judge ourselves.  It is a simple concept: if we want to be truly judged by law—ALL OF US ARE GUILTY.  And so we can be free of the law because THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE SET ME FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.

We are entrenched in LEGALISM—and time and time again I prove it to myself:  I have read that very verse and said this: “Do I live according to the Spirit?  Because so many times I am not—so am I in Christ Jesus?”

But God is trying to tell us to walk into the freedom He is offering…..

We can walk away from legalism….and guilt….and doubt….and self-hatred…..

And we can walk with Jesus.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is about a response.  It is about a God who takes 5000 steps at us—to meet us—and to love us.  But we must RESPOND and take just ONE to meet Him.

What would your life truly look like if you could walk in Romans 8?

Would it look different than what it does today?

If it would, I encourage you on this day to RESPOND to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Memorize that scripture and ask God to write it on your heart.

  • John 3:16 says He came to save the world.
  • 2 Corinthians 5 says that we are to reconcile men to God.
  • John 19 records Jesus saying that “It is finished”—that our sin debt is PAID IN FULL.
  • Isaiah 53 says that He (God) laid on Him (Jesus) the iniquity of us all.
  • Ecclesiastes 12 says that we are to “fear God and keep His commandments–for this is the whole duty of man…”  (Not by legal means—but by BEING IN CHRIST JESUS!!)
  • Genesis 6 says:  “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord…”
  • Genesis 14 says that Melchizedek put grace and blessing and hope on Abraham just like God, through Jesus, wants to do with us.

And so how do we RESPOND?

I think a model of our response can be found in scripture.

Men and women saved by Jesus did not go live in seclusion and focus on their faults and deficiencies.  They lived in freedom and began to walk out the call that Jesus had put over their lives.

And so should we.

In The Name of the Father and the

Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

173 He Is More

From John 6 I want to make reference to verses 53-54, 60, and 66.

John 6  53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

Jesus can heal you, and He can heal your situation, and your mindset……yet He Is More.

He can rescue you from the claws of the enemy and the pits of Hell……yet He Is More.

He can speak and give you a word of wisdom that will change not only your life, but the lives of others……yet He Is More.

He can give you principles to make your business survive, your marriage survive, your family flourish……yet He Is More.

And that is what I want you to take with you today from what I am saying:

He Is More

He isn’t your fall-back

He is not your rescuer in times of trouble

He is not your hope for the nations

He is not a God who reigns on high who doesn’t know anything about you

He is not a rabbit’s foot that you can use for your big battles

He Is More

Many followed Him to see the next great thing….but He is not a traveling show to awe the crowd and make people stand in amazement….

He Is More

And He proved it then, and He is going to prove it now…..and He sealed it so that you could meet Him by taking JUST ONE STEP to allow Him into your life……

Coming to represent God, He made sure that we would have no excuse:

He showed up illegitimate so that we could tell Him “my life does not matter” and He would understand.

He was taken to the desert and starved and tempted so that we could tell Him “I am being tempted beyond my strength” and He would understand.

He was talked about and challenged and ridiculed when He did His best work so that we could tell Him “they don’t even recognize my best” and He would understand.

He became a carpenter so that we could tell Him “my work is hard” and He would understand.

He came at a time that they would not recognize Him so that we could tell Him “I am not noticed or recognized” and He would understand.

He gathered the most ill-prepared and under-valued people that He could, and had no money, no home, and no power so that we could tell Him “I don’t have enough resources” and He would understand.

And when it came time to stake His claim on your life—–

He did it in body and spirit.

Betrayed by a confidant

Abandoned by His friends

Tried in a court with no fairness

He was beaten and jeered

He was made to carry the instrument that they would kill Him with

He was mocked by the very men He was executed with and made the worst of the worst

And yet, as He took His last breath, He said:

It Is Paid In Full

Never will we have to say:

I don’t have enough

OR

I am short

OR

My qualifications don’t measure up

And when you ACCEPT the free gift that He gives us and worship Him and pray to Him…….

I want you to remember:

You are Loved exactly as you are…He made you and He is proud of you just as you are

You are Saved from your worst choices…He cancelled them on the cross

You are Valued in your points of least value…He put His life over yours and gave you RICHES BEYOND DESCRIPTION

And I suggest that you tell Him:

You Are More

172 Hit The Reset

I sat on Thanksgiving morning as my wife, Angie, lead the family in a devotion before we started our day.  This message, in its entirety, is based on the notes I took as she taught us.

She made reference to the fact that we can “start over”….that we can begin again.  It is not a new concept but she presented it in a new way.

Just as we can restart or reset a computer, we can do that with our own life.  Now, this is not usually true away from God. But it is ALWAYS true with God. He allows us to simply reset….or renew….or, in His words—repent.  Repent is really to turn.  We can simply TURN….We can TURN our life in the direction that we should go.

Paul spent some time in Galatians 3 correcting the Galatians—accusing them of “witchcraft”, legalism, and many other things….you can almost sense his frustration as he writes to them…but at the end of the day he communicates what God truly wants to say to us:

Galatians 3  11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

Many of us are guilty of getting caught in the chaos of life and becoming…..”legalistic”

But the reality of the gospel is this:

  • It is for EVERYONE.
  • We are not better than those who live in darkness.
  • It is not aligned with politics.

Though we all know these to be true….if you are like me…..you tend to not believe that in your heart.

I am guilty of judging.

I am guilty of aligning the Bible with political views.

I am guilty of thinking:  “I have done it ‘right’ …. so I am better.”

But God’s reality for all of us is simple:

We are ONLY RIGHTEOUS by Jesus….and we are ONLY RIGHTEOUS by living by faith.

In as clear of language as we can understand, God tells us to not live by legalism…..but to live by Faith in Jesus, and Jesus alone.  Isaiah even goes so far as to say in Isaiah 64:6 that our good works are like “filthy rags”.

We were created to worship God.

Made from nothing to truly be something.

God has called us to bring LIGHT and ORDER and BOUNDARIES to a world that has escaped those things and is in dire need of finding something to grab onto to bring back hope.

Hit the Reset Button.

Ask God to Rebuild Your Life.

Because having God “Build Your Life” is the only hope you could ever have.

171 The Only Name That Matters To Me

When Jesus got upset with the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the religious leaders, etc….He Went Off….

He called them out and He called them out BIG TIME.

He called them Hypocrites.  Which I would say is Two-Faced or Fake.

Who is your God?  Or should I ask: What is your god?

As I ended a long day today and heard the song “Yours Will Be” by Big Daddy Weave…..but it sure hit home…..

What do I care what the world thinks?

I really only care, at the end of the day, what God thinks.

I mean, really—–if I live for Him—–and Him alone—-then my life would be really well lived.

And as I sat and sang that song to the Lord—I was deeply convicted by this.

He is the one I live for….because if I live for Him—then EVERYTHING ELSE will line up….and if it doesn’t—then maybe I was in the wrong line in the first place.

Paul is expressing the heart of God when he writes this:

Philippians 1:9-11

9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Faith in the Lord is a really simple thing:  We make Him the center.

And that simple line in the song says it all:

The Only Thing That Matters To Me

When what He thinks is The Only Thing That Matters To Me my life begins to change and He begins to give me the character that I want others to believe about me.

When what He thinks is The Only Thing That Matters To Me my actions begin to not be in line with what He wants me to do and not what I think others want me to do.

Being duplicit, or TWO-FACED occurs when I have two masters.  A student of mine would say FAKE…..

I don’t want to be FAKE.

I want my God to say that I am REAL….and that I do exactly what He wants me to do.

I want His Name to be THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS TO ME.

170

You should never fear the road you have in front of you.

I do not say that with arrogance or overconfidence…..

I don’t say it because I have delusions of grandeur…..

I do not say it out of a lack of wisdom…..

I say it because I know Lord…..

And He owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

He has counted every hair on your head.

And He has a plan for those who love Him.

Never was this more emphasized than in the book of Samuel.

I am sure that David thought that he had been given the garbage job.

That he had been overlooked and disregarded.

That the plan for him meant nothing…..

But the reality was just the opposite.

David learned to defend sheep from predators and he spent time in worship.

Imagine how important those two things were for him as he walked into his destiny.

He knew how to defend the weak…..and he knew how to cry out to God.

When Samuel showed up to anoint him as king….he knew exactly who God had chosen as soon as he saw him……and to the surprise of David’s ENTIRE family, he was chosen:

1 Samuel 16  7 The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

So don’t be afraid to be a humble servant of the Lord that “lays in wait.”  When you are, find Him and have Him put something into you that can not possibly be measured by the outside world…..and then when you need to, release it…..just as David did.

Not too long after this meeting, David stood on a battlefield……….

And he stood on a battlefield with a Giant’s head in his hand.

The enemy of your soul can do whatever he wants.  He can speak into your mind and sabotage your plans …. And he can even totally discourage you….and he probably has.

He has discouraged me…..

But let me tell you this…..He can’t have YOU.  You belong to God. And you need to stand up and cry out to Him that you are His.  Because when you align with Him, the enemy can’t have anything but a fear of what awaits him.

So rise up, child of God…..and rise up with confidence and faith…..

Because that mountain or hill or discouragement that stands in front of you can be climbed and conquered……and the test that you go through as you get through it will eventually be something that others need to hear:  A Testimony

So if you are in a TEST:

FIGHT.

WORSHIP.

KILL PREDATORS THAT WOULD MESS WITH THE WEAK.

PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENT OF WORSHIP.

STAND ON THE HILL AND LOOK OVER THE VALLEY.

BUT WHATEVER YOU DO–

DON’T LOSE FAITH.  THERE ARE GIANTS IN FRONT OF YOU THAT NEED TO BE BEHEADED,

AND GOD HAS CALLED YOU– YOU –TO DO IT.

In The Name of the Father and the

Son and the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

169 Seek The Faith…….Then Ask The Question

It doesn’t take too long to assess that we have… “some issues”.

Watch a political advertisement, listen to a song, turn on the news.

We have lost our way.

And it has ALWAYS been that way.

But here is the TRUTH.  We are not very far from being VERY GOOD…..and it has ALWAYS been that way as well.

We just simply need to put things in order.

You see…..timing and alignment and order are EVERYTHING.

Football coaches know this…..because football is truly a game of inches…….

In fact, I am guilty of always sarcastically telling my team:

“Changing that won’t make THAT much difference.  It is just the difference between a sack for them versus a touchdown for us….but it won’t make that much difference.”

Timing and alignment and order in football are EVERYTHING…and it works like that in the faith as well.

Jesus Christ led the most compelling life in the history of all mankind…and if you want to be bought in hook, line, and sinker….then I will encourage you to open the book of John and truly press in and read about Him.  He will change your mind on all things…..

I know this….because if He can change my mind—then He can change yours—because mine is the most stubborn, double-minded, hypocritical, negative, and depraved mind that you will ever meet…..

And today…..I will simply say to you this:

Don’t ask God, “why can’t I do this?” or “Why would a loving God allow this?” or “Why is Jesus the only way?” or any other of the questions that you might have piling up……because that approach will not work….and even Jesus says this:  IT WILL NOT WORK.

Jesus makes some reference to this in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

We are not a lost cause….we are simply OUT OF ORDER.  We do our stuff—and we ask Him to come and join us in it…..what we really need to do is HIS stuff….and follow what He is trying to do.

It is a simple concept:

Seek First His Kingdom and His Righteousness, just as we say in the Lord’s Prayer:

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Will Be Done

On Earth As It Is In Heaven

And with this:

I want to lay down today the 20 Day Challenge

Seek Him and Him alone

Proclaim To Him:  “Your Kingdom Come, Your Desire Be Done, On Earth as You Have It In Heaven.”

And begin to walk out your day belonging to Him.

And give Him everything…..Good and Bad.

Lay it down at His feet.

It is a simple thing really….but God asks us for simple things.

Align Your Life To Follow Him ALONE.

And ask your questions second.

I GUARANTEE YOU, IT WILL BE THE BEST DECISION THAT YOU HAVE EVER MADE.

168 Do What You Are Supposed To Do

A man said something years ago that really put freedom on me.

He said there is a tension in scripture……that sometimes the scripture does not apply to what we are doing……

At first, I was skeptical…..The Word of God is the Word of God—NO NEGOTIATION.

I still believe that with all my heart—-but we must STILL WALK IN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND FIND OUT WHAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO DO.

And that is why we can read the word and say that some verses contradict each other.  This is not the case. It is simply The Tension Of Scripture.

Think about it:

  • Exodus 20 says to:  “Honor your mother and father”, but Jesus said in Mark 2 that “The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.”
  • Exodus 20 says to:  “Honor The Sabbath and keep it holy”, but Jesus said in Luke 9 to “let the dead bury the dead” and told a man to go proclaim the Kingdom of God.
  • In Daniel 3 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood before a King Nebuchadnezzar and boldly refused TO BOW DOWN, but in many verses God tells people to go into hiding.

The more I read about this, the more it makes sense and brings freedom.

There is a time to do one thing and there other times to do exactly the opposite.

This is not an excuse to disobey God….it is the simple fact that God has a time and place for everything…….and it is God’s time.

Is there a time when God has called you to stand up and oppose others for His Name’s sake?  YES.

Is there a time when you are called to sit and remain silent?  YES.

The bottom line is this:

DO WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO.

When?  How?  What?

All of us have that question.

And the answer is this:

God Knows.

He knows your battles and He knows you.

Press in to Him and put Him above ALL that you hold dear.

Walk in freedom and know that you are forgiven when you mess it up.

Rejoice in the fact that you are free from the enemy for all eternity.

And, in response:

Do What You Are Supposed To Do

167 A Word From Colby Austin

Colby Austin of Longmont High School delivered a compelling word on Friday to our FCA Club at Longmont High School.  Here it is!

Growing up I have always associated myself with the things that I was involved in or the things that I thought that I was good at. So me considering myself a relatively smart person and a good student, put my self-worth into my grades and the scores that I would get on tests. And I am not in the top 5% of our class, and I don’t do amazing on every test in every class. I would compare myself and I would always end up feeling less than, worthless, and that no matter how hard I tried, I was never good enough. And with soccer and cross country, again I put my worth into my performance and again I always ended up feeling worthless and terrible about myself. It is really easy to put our self-worth into things that we really shouldn’t be putting that much weight into. Like attention from certain people what other people think of us, what society thinks of us. But we are not who anybody else says we are, we are not who our culture says we are, we are who God says we are. We need to put our value and self-worth in Him and Him alone or else we will always come up empty and feeling worthless.

Everything in this world can be taken away in an instant. Job, Girlfriend, Boyfriend, Health, House, Friends, Acceptance, Money. So if our identity is found solely in one of those things or something else of this world, then we become lost and loose purpose when/if we lost it. A relationship with God is the only thing in any of our lives that is promised for forever. No one can ever take His love from us. So if our identity and confidence is found solely in Christ and him alone, no  matter what loss we experience, no matter what rejection, no matter what we do or what happens to us, no matter what hurt, We are still worthy, we are still complete and we can have joy because we are His children.

God created each of us in His own divine image. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. The God who created this entire universe and all the natural wonders of this world created You. That feels pretty incredible. So in order to put our self-worth in God’s hands, we have to know who we are in Him. God knows the individual hairs on our head and he yearns to have an intimate relationship with each and every one of us. But our God does not barge into our lives. We need to actively ask for His grace and wisdom every day and give up to Him whatever we are struggling with. The more fully we invite God in, the less we will feel uninvited by others. We must tie our identities to our unchanging, unflinching, unyielding, and undeniably good, and unquestionably loving God. And I know this is so hard to do. Every day across the world people seek out so much just to fill that void in their heart, whether it’s money, materials, other people, they will always end up feeling empty and lonely. Because that void is cannot be filled with anything of this earth. And how dangerous it is when our souls are gasping for God but we’re too distracted flirting with the world to notice. He waits every day with every answer we asked a question for, every comfort we crave, every affection we’re desperate for, while we look everywhere else but at Him. How must it break His heart when we walk around so desperate for a love He waits to give us each and every day. We just need to slow down in our ridiculously fast-paced world and be with Him, and talk to Him and give everything to Him. We must live out our lives with a kingdom mindset. This world is not our home. There is something so much bigger for us past our life on this Earth. So why put your self-worth into anything but God? And I struggle with this a lot myself.

Often I find myself trying to do everything and control my life instead of giving it up to God. And again through this, I will never feel fulfilled and I feel myself pushing my self away from God. And falling back into sin. Relating to self-worth, I really struggle with Guilt. I sin and know what I did was wrong but instead of asking for forgiveness from God, I find myself running in the opposite direction. I feel as though God is disappointed in me and that through all of my sins I’m not worthy of God’s love. And maybe you guys feel the same sometimes. But we have to remember that Jesus sees our sin more clearly than anyone, yet loves us more than anyone. Nothing we do can separate us from God’s love. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, we are free from them, no matter how big they are. He makes all things new. We must not put our self-worth in where we have failed or come up short. We may sin, but we are not our sin. We are only who God says we are. God hates the sin, not the sinner.

God has an amazing plan for our lives, one uniquely designed personally for each and every one of us. We just have to listen for what He calls us to do. So go out and live your purpose, live with a kingdom mindset, and place your self-worth in the Lord and you will feel so incredibly loved, worthy, and fulfilled. And as you go through this journey every day, remember to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. And in your life, You will never look into the eyes of someone God does not love. Always be kind.

166 The Rules of Being Accused

As I was driving in my car, I became deeply convicted to write about:  The Rules of Accusation…..

And not long after that, I became deeply convicted to write about:  The Rules of Being Accused…..

John 8 1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.  Now what do you say?”6  They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

So what are the Rules of Being Accused?

The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy.

He is the one who wants nothing more than to bring us to our knees in shame.

He is the very one who tempts us….Come on–this will be fun.

And then follows that up with….You Idiot!  What were you thinking?

He is the one who brings us shame and lies to keep us trapped….It is TOO LATE TO GO BACK NOW.

But Jesus doesn’t give us those points:

He wants us to deal in TRUTH.

When people are accusing you—-it is very important to ask that question:  Is What They Are Saying True?

If it is, we need TO CHANGE.  If they are accusing us of something that we are guilty of—we need to not be afraid to face the truth.

That being said:  ANYTHING THAT ATTACKS YOUR CHARACTER OR WHO YOU ARE…..that is a lie.  And it is a lie from the pits of hell.

You are God’s kid. He put His claim on your and He has seen you as you were knitted together in your mother’s womb.

He saw you AS SO VALUABLE that He decided to DIE ON A CROSS TO SAVE YOU! You are His prize!

God wants us to be real.

He does want us to work on our “stuff”….and we all have “stuff” that truly needs to be fixed.

But we are not to let others tell us that “our stuff” is who we are…..it isn’t.  It was killed on the cross 2000 years ago.

Jesus came for us.  He came for us so that we might not just be forgiven of our sin but that we might deal with our sin.

He hasn’t called us to be holier-than-others-hypocrites and He doesn’t want to us to be perfect.

Are you accused?

Cry out to God.  Cry out to Him and ask Him heal you.

Ask Him to come and fix what’s broken and heal what’s scarred.

Ask Him to be the One thing in your life that’s right even if everything else is wrong.

Ask Him to be YOUR God.

In The Name Of The Father And The Son And The Holy Spirit.

Amen.
