I could not help but ask: “What is this ‘sign of Jonah’ that Jesus is talking about?”
Matthew 16 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
Is this the idea that we are guilty like they were in Nineveh?
Is He referring to the crucifixion?
Is He foreshadowing being raised from the dead?
I am not a Biblical scholar but I certainly understand “wicked” and “adulterous”. That certainly applies to my generation. And it certainly applies to me without the covering of almighty Jesus.
We value things that ultimately have no value.
We put our time into things that ultimately will run out of time.
We worship things that are not worthy of worship.
But isn’t that the whole point?
For God So Loved The World …
Take the time to worship today.
Take the time to declare Him King today.
Take the time to read His word today.
He is the Alpha and the Omega.
He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
He is the Great I Am.
And He did orchestrate a great miracle in Nineveh when Jonah spoke to them.
They repented.
They fasted.
And they turned from their evil ways.
This is not just a one time story in the Bible.
It is our story.
It is our hope.
It is our life.
In Matthew 4 Jesus says: “come and follow Me and I will make you fishers of men”.
In Matthew 16 He says: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
In Matthew 19 He says: “truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones … ”
In Matthew 21 He says: “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.”
Jesus is our only hope.
He doesn’t need to give us a sign.
He already has.
Get on the bus … and ride into the Kingdom. Because His Kingdom is the only one that matters.
Thy Kingdom Come!
In The Name of the Father and the
Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
